Touring with a friend

A good friend of mine who has been gone for months came back to town and we went for a ski. It was a nice day and we got a late start so we just skied our light gear and didn't go very high. Snow was great and it was a fun afternoon. I'm glad we got out!

Merry Christmas!

I got out for nice solo ski today. Great snow for meadow skipping on some low angle aspects and a beautiful day!

Holiday lights?

While I'm not too excited about this being so close to my house, there's a certain beauty to arc welding in the twilight.

Avi 1 Class

I spent the weekend with a good group of people taking the AIRE Avalanche Level 1 course near Crested Butte. It was certainly an interesting weekend for it because we got several feet of snow. So there was lots to study and many changes going on in the pack as we did our field work.

Much of what we learned was review for me but it was nice to be able to formalize this information and and refine/practice my techniques for evaluating snow and safe travel in avalanche terrain.

If you are a backcountry skier, rider, or just want to know how to stay safe in avalanche terrain, I highly recommend this course and Crested Butte Mountain Guides who taught and developed this internationally recognized program.

Brush fire

We came upon this fire burning in a field next to the road the other day South of Monte Vista, Co. It was a controlled burn done by a rancher.

The rancher was a Mennonite (I think) and had a horse and carriage parked nearby, which made for another nice photographic element.

We stopped here on the way home from Taos recently. This is an interesting part of Colorado I'd like to know more about.

Signal Peak hike

Nice day for a hike last weekend. Too bad because we really need more snow! The higher mountains have some but we are very dry here in the valley. Hopefully this will change soon!

Back to work

IMGP3609, originally uploaded by MattB (somedudeus).

I often like to shoot on my lunch break and on my way back to work the other day I realized I didn't take any shots. I needed to get back to my desk so I took this in transit. I thought the outcome was alright!

Light and shadow

IMGP3585.jpg, originally uploaded by MattB (somedudeus).

I had a chance to stop by an area I've been wanting to shoot for some time. I love this kind of subject!

I'm editing this to add some information. Some people have wanted to know how to achieve the starburst effect I get in these shots. The key is stopping the lens way down, in this case I think I was at around f/13. So stop down to f/11 or more (this varies by lens so I'm speaking from a Pentax DA15 perspective), meter off the sky or your subject without the sun in the frame. Hold the shutter half way and then once it's locked, recompose with the sun in your frame and you should get your starburst. The number of points depends on how many blades your lens has. So my seven bladed DA15 creates these nice 14 point stars. Hope this helps and happy shooting!
