I haven't updated this blog in a while but I have been shooting. So have a look at my Flickr stream if you want to catch up.
This image is a stack of 120 individual exposures of 10s each. I took it at Waunita Hot Springs Ranch when we stayed over night last night celebrating my son's birthday.
It got clear after a storm day (of great skiing at Monarch) and the stars were really nice. So I set up for this, started it, and just came back later. Then I combined the images in ImageStacker. I'm happy with the result.

Better late than never! Now let the snow fly so we can catch up!
I hiked up a hill next to town the other night to catch the lights in the icy mist over town. It was about 5 degrees F which is normal for us this time of year.
I shot this with my K-5 and Rokinon 8mm Fisheye on a tripod for a 10s exposure.

This is a composite image made from six different photos taken from the same 100 shot series. I went through and got the shots with visible meteors and layered them in Photoshop so only the meteors were visible against just one of the shot's background. I repeated that process once for the rocks which I light painted with my headlamp in one exposure.

I got out early today to catch the Orionid meteor shower. It was peaking in the wee hours so I dragged myself out to try and get some meteor photos. I got a few decent shots and I liked this one. I also ended up with hundreds of fairly plain photos without any meteors so I stacked those for the trails below. I loved how all the different colors became so visible. Anyway, I'd say that was worth an early morning. I think I'll have a few good photos from it too.

I used the shareware application ImageStacker for this stack of 100 15s exposures.

I camped near home over the weekend for my wife's and my 17th wedding anniversary. It was great fun and I set up my camera for some star trails late Saturday night. This is 100 consecutive 8s exposures stacked using ImageStacker software.
The Pentax K-5 has a very handy interval shooting feature that facilitates this kind of shot very well. I just set it up on the tripod, hit go, and returned later to review the results.
I just missed a big meteor while I was setting up (darn!) but I did catch a couple of small ones near the top of the frame. The red trail on the left is most likely a satellite and the horizontal ones are airplanes. Foreground fill light was provided by the almost-full moon rising to the East.

Challenging light conditions tonight but a fantastic moon. This was taken at Hartman Rocks. Dynamic range was fully utilized!

Or maybe just a toe? I hope my photo which was used on Outside Magazine's website is just the start of something.
The photo was one I shot last summer getting images for another magazine's web site that I never submitted to them (met my quota already). Then recently I was contacted by Dave Wiens looking for a photo of the 24 Hours in the Sage mountain bike race. I went through my unused images and found this one I had previously overlooked. I like it and I hope the good folks at Outside do too.
Plenty more where that came from! :)

We stayed at Waunita Hot Spring Ranch for my son's birthday after a great ski day at Monarch. It was so pretty out at night I had to get the tripod out for some night shots.

There's also this cool old truck out back that was being so nicely lit by that moonlight.
Waunita is a really nice spot with a lot of character. We had a great time!

The Farmer's Almanac says a ring around the moon foretells unsettled weather. I really hope that means more powder this weekend!
I shot this while doing a little after work XC skiing at Mill Creek.

These guys were working hard this week trimming the tree for tonight's Night of Lights lighting. Santa was coming and everything.

Then tonight Santa came by and lit the tree. The people were happy.
