I was off work for a trip that got cancelled so I thought I'd shoot some of the dramatic clouds we were having that day just to get out. I headed down to the river near the Van Tuyl trails and brought a few favorite lenses and my ND 3.0 filter. It's a 10 stop filter which reduces the light coming in by 1/1000x. That allowed for the 25s exposure which have this fun effect in the clouds and water.

A beautiful day for playing on the river! Low levels didn't seem to dampen the fun. Events included Canine Big Air, Freestyle Kayak, Home made rafts, and more.

This shot from the river festival last weekend was on the cover of our local paper this morning. I'm pretty happy about that! Not a lot of money involved but the recognition is always nice. I like the shot too.
I was getting a lot of photos of the tricks they were throwing but decided I wanted to zoom in a little closer for some facial expressions while these guys were in the midst of all this chaos. That decision worked out pretty well.

I shoot mostly with primes but sometimes a zoom is the better tool and this was one of those times. I used my Pentax DA L 55-300mm which is an inexpensive lens that produces images better than the price would suggest. The tradeoff is it doesn't do that well in low light or trying to get a really narrow DOF (it's slow). One day when I'm feeling flush I'll get a nice fast zoom ($$) but until then this will have to do!

I shot a few water study photos with the Sears 135 f/2.8 the other day for a class I'm taking. Light was really tough for landscapes (bright overcast) so I decided to focus on closer views.

1/15 was as slow as I could go without overexposing them but it seemed to be the magic number.

One more from my trip to the whitewater park the other day. I used Lightroom 3 for the conversion and I have to say I really like the new presets (over LR2). I usually mess with them a little but they provide a great start and foundation to work from.
