Big day yesterday with a big ride and a big drive. The ride was a fun one on and off Monarch Pass made extra hard by wind. We needed to go that way anyway but with only one car I needed to ride the shuttle route. That would be tough even without the headwind. The drive was to pick up my son from my in-law's place in Southern Colorado.
I took this photo as we were about to drive into the town of Silver Cliff at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo range. Haze from distant fires accentuates the sun rays in a way that I just had to stop for the shot. Light traffic made the road a good viewpoint.

I had to stop and take this from the roadside at the Colorado National Monument. Storms rolled through the Grand Valley all day and this one was was especially well defined. When I saw I could use some canyon walls to lead to it I had to go for it. I'm glad I did.
Those storms complicated our intended camping trip but didn't keep us from having a great time on a mini family vacation.

We stayed at Waunita Hot Spring Ranch for my son's birthday after a great ski day at Monarch. It was so pretty out at night I had to get the tripod out for some night shots.

There's also this cool old truck out back that was being so nicely lit by that moonlight.
Waunita is a really nice spot with a lot of character. We had a great time!

I took a quick trip over to ride the White RIm trail in SE Utah near Moab. We had a great time, great weather, and it was an all-around great trip. Here I captured the sunset from our camp site along the trail called White Crack.
The puddles are interesting because they are typically dry and when it rains tiny shrimp appear in them which have been dormant as dry eggs since the last rain (it can be years sometimes).
This is a 3 exposure HDR created using HDRPad (which is free!). The lens was the fantastic Pentax DA15 Limited on my K-x.

We came upon this fire burning in a field next to the road the other day South of Monte Vista, Co. It was a controlled burn done by a rancher.
The rancher was a Mennonite (I think) and had a horse and carriage parked nearby, which made for another nice photographic element.

We stopped here on the way home from Taos recently. This is an interesting part of Colorado I'd like to know more about.

I had a week of software seminar teaching recently in Indianapolis. The city seems pretty nice but it was hot and humid. I got out for a few walks and runs and managed to take some photos.
The shot above is of some of the local young people with their fixies downtown one afternoon.

I have a gallery of photos from the trip on my Flickr account here.

One more from the dunes. I like how this one came out. It all came together and I think the B&W treatment works really well with the sand.

Mary did a little yoga while we hiked at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. What a beautiful and fun place.
